In recent years, Taipower has continued to strengthen the quality of power supply to outlying islands and mountainous areas. Examples of Taipower’s efforts to fully enhance independent emergency response capability include building the first grid-connected energy storage system in Kinmen in 2020, and opening seven anti-disaster microgrid stations in Pingtung in April this year (2022). To meet the demand for electricity in Taitung's Lanyu Township during the pandemic, Taipower, in cooperation with Delta Electronics, has built an energy storage system at the Lanyu power plant that can store 1,100 kWh of electricity. Taipower has also cooperated with Microsoft Taiwan to introduce Mixed Reality (MR) technology into the equipment maintenance, which was officially launched today (June 17). Taipower officials said that the energy storage system can be matched with existing units to enhance the stability and flexibility of the power system. In the future, in the event of emergency power events such as a power trips, power can be supplied within 0.2 seconds, thousands of times faster than traditional standby units. The MR technology can break spatial restrictions on outlying islands, instantly connecting local Taipower experts to enhance the efficiency of power inspection and repair.

Taipower held the Lanyu Power Plant Energy Storage System and MR Equipment Commissioning Ceremony today at the Lanyu Power Plant. Guests included: Chen Ming-shu, Taipower Deputy General Manager; Liu Ming-Chung, Ministry of Economic Affairs State-owned Enterprise Commission CEO; Wang Chih-hui, Taitung County Government Deputy Magistrate; Chiaman Chialamu, Lanyu Township Mayor; Joe Ai, Delta Energy Solutions Division Senior Director; and Pan Hsien-kuo, Microsoft Taiwan President. Together, they witnessed the birth of a new era in smart power supply for Lanyu.

Taipower officials said that the Lanyu area is a small independent power system, with a total of about 2,000 households using electricity. Lanyu is self-sufficient in terms of supply and demand, making it more likely to be affected by emergencies. The existing Lanyu Power Plant consists of six diesel generating units, with a current maximum capacity of about 4,800 kW and 61.2 kWh of renewable solar power. With the booming tourism industry in Lanyu in recent years, the local economy has been boosted, and electricity consumption has increased by 6.6% annually, with the largest electricity consumption record in Lanyu (4,679 kWh) set in June 2020.

To strengthen the quality of electricity in Lanyu, Taipower has partnered with Delta Electronics, a leading power and energy management company, to install a 500 kW/1.1 MWh energy storage system at the Lanyu power plant. The system consists of 160 lithium battery modules, and can store 1,100 kWh of electricity, equivalent to a full day of electricity for nearly 100 home users. After this energy storage system comes online, it will help maintain the stability of the power grid. In the event of emergency power events such as trips, it can instantly supply power to come online within 0.2 seconds and continuously supply power with 500 kWh for 2 hours, thus providing a buffer time for emergency repairs.

Taipower officials said that, in addition to installing the energy storage system, Taipower has also cooperated with Microsoft Taiwan to introduce mixed reality (MR) technology to assist in daily inspection work. This will help enhance the efficiency of power inspection on Lanyu Island and overcome the limitations of transportation distances from the island. When performing maintenance work, Taipower staff in Lanyu can check the operation flow of the unit and other related information in real time by wearing MR devices, and can directly connect with Taipower's expert team on the island remotely, to help troubleshoot any problems.

They can thus overcome obstacles posed by distance to the island.

Taipower officials stated that the company will gradually retire existing units, and replace them with new ones. The installation capacity is expected to increase by 3,500 kWh in 2024, taking into account both the demand for electricity on Lanyu and environmental protection. Taipower is also working to bury 38.8 kilometers of power lines around the island, with 13.4 kilometers already completed and nearly 4 kilometers more expected to be completed next year. In addition to reducing the impact of typhoons and salt damage to power lines, Taipower is thus also doing its part to protect the natural beauty of Lanyu Island.
