Introduction to Nuclear Power Plants

The Reason and Introduction of Nuclear Power Generation

With the economic development of Taiwan in the 1960s, Taiwan’s power source had replaced hydropower by fire. However, although Taiwan produced coal, but almost no oil. The fuel of thermal power generation relied on imports. But the situation in the Middle East, where the fuel was imported was Long-term instability. In order to ensure stable supply of energy, also support the power needed for the booming domestic economy. Mr. Sun, Yun-Suan ,the former Minister of Economy, decided to build a nuclear power plant around 1970 to meet the needs.

Chinshan Nuclear Power Plant was approved to be constructed in 1970 and the construction began at the end of 1971. During the construction period, the first oil crisis occurred in October 1973 (at that time, the price of crude oil rose from less than US$3 per barrel to over US$13 in 1973). The cost of thermal power generation has exploded and affected the supply of energy. The urgency of nuclear power generation had increased. In the same year, the government listed nuclear power plants in the Ten Major Construction Projects. It indicates that the government attaches importance to the construction of basic energy (The First Nuclear Power Plant was included priority construction in the Ten Major Construction Projects ; Kuosheng and Maanshan Nuclear Power Plants were the extension plan for nuclear power generation, and were subsequently included in the Twelve Major Construction Projects).

Nuclear Power Plant Distribution

At present, Maanshan Nuclear Power Plants is operating; The operation license of the Chinshan and Kuosheng Nuclear Power Plants had been expired, and the units are being decommissioned; Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant is being implemented asset maintenance management according to the instructions of the government.
